the only casualty of the night was the format for the debate. there was supposed to be certain subjects over certain period of times but pretty quickly both governor romney and the president began running over time and taking over the course of the debate but that made for a very lively evening. john dickerson is our cbs news political director. john, what's your take away from the debate so far? >> well, scott, it's interesting looking at the pictures right now of the two candidates. they're talking to each other like they're friends. it's -- that was the sense of this debate. there s no -- it was a lot of clear choices, but i think if you look at the context of this debate, governor romney was coming in, there was some trouble. conservatives were worried about him. they were worried he was losing this race. i think that he was competent and calm and looked the president's equal in this debate and i think for him giving the state of where the romney campaign was that was probably a good thing for him tonight. >> pelley: and both candidates were

i thought this was romney's night. romney did very well, and he was able to, i think, articulate well why it is someone with great business experience is what we need to turn this economy around. neil: i know last time we chatted, governor, you had said that it was important for mitt romney to bring it to the president, and not only to see an electoral argument -- you didn't say it, but i'm paraphrasing -- is passionate argument in other words to show why a change in leadership is so important or that he could lose this thing. do you think that tonight he did that? >> well, he did that, but, neil, to be honest with you, i was still hoping that both of these candidates would be able to explain to the american public the economic woes that we are in right now and the gravity of the situation that our debt is causing. we are drowning. we are a country facing bankruptcy that will forever change the american landscape, and neither candidate really articulated, i think, quite passionately strongly the gravity of the situatio

no question this was mitt romney's night on style, on kind of resetting where the campaign was. and that's a question i think we have to step out and ask ourselves. did this night fundamentally alter the trajectory of the race? for mitt romney he needed to play for more time. where the polls are going into this race, where the president was starting to open up a lead. he needed people not to close their minds and not give him a chance and tune him out. he may have gotten another chance. and president obama needed to close the sale, and he didn't do that tonight. >> chuck todd out in the spin room in denver. to savannah's point, the romney campaigns need to play for time. and the numbers that are still out there and able to be on the move despite, as we keep pointing out, the fact that voting, chuck, is under way in 34 out of the 50 states. >> but look, there is some fluidity. we know that there is some places, particularly in some of the battleground states, virginia and florida and colorado where we are tonight, in particular where the president hadn't been opening up a lead. y

, in their view, was doubling down on policies, but ultimately, performance wise, this was a strong night for mitt romney. >> david muir, we saw the big smile on mitt romney immediately after the debate. some results already coming in, romney's odds going up. >> yeah, that smile spills relief on romney's face tonight. within the campaign, too, george. in fact, i got a text before the debate was over from a key adviser who said "mission accomplished." the governor looked to put the president on the defensive. they think that was accomplished here tonight. also, you heard governor romney right out of the gate come out here and talk about a woman that he met on the trail in a last couple of days, talking about economic hardship. that was another hurdle that romney tried to cross, connecting with average problems facing americans, not a surprise that he talked about women on the trail and in key states, key battleground states, what they believe that as you mentioned, george, no knockout punch here tonight, but it was a strong performance from the governor when he needed it most. >> all right
